Hypocrite Lecteur!

Well, back from the grind.... Sadly, there's not much of note to report here, or, rather, the stuff on which I might report is, professionally-speaking, better left out of discussion here. Sometimes, discretion is difficult, especially when one feels most drawn to rant. *sigh*

My own general frustration and dissatisfaction with disciplinarity in literature has had me teasing through in my wee little head the idea of "The Doctor J School Of Literature," something I envision, oh so dreamily, as a kind of variation on law school, an advanced programme for those most genuinely interested in the study of literature, a programme that would require good grades and decent writing skills to gain admission. I realize I'm in danger of seeming an elitist snob, and perhaps I am indeed becoming one, but I find myself increasingly disheartened. I imagine a programme dedicated to the instruction of skilled and precise writing and analysis, and to the instruction of literary history and forms. Ideally this should be happening at the university level, but it's increasingly apparent that universities these days are little more than overpriced secondary schools. I know, I know: get off your high horse, Doctor J. It does bother me, though, that a lot of the excuses that are made within the humanities and social sciences would never pass muster in the scientific, mathematical, or engineering disciplines. I should get to putting together a series of notes on Shakespeare for mes eleves that I may or may not post here when they're done (you know, on the extremely odd chance that anyone would find them of interest). We shall see.

So, sorry folks: no links today, no smart-ass flippancies, no pseudo-clever commentary. Maybe tomorrow. Cheers.
