Maybe "interesting," but definitely pandering. If you're the person of the year, and I'm the person of the year, and Joe Schmoe sitting in his underwear documenting each convoluted twist of Lost is person of the year, then there's no real point in saying PERSON, much less the superlative "of the year." The term "shameless cop-out" hardly seems adequate.
Conversely, we can now ALL say we're equal to Hitler and Bono. Oh, the select company!
